Job Search

So, I'm back blogging again. There are a bunch of things I've thought about writing about lately, but I'm going to ignore all of them for now and detail my search for a job.

For a while now I've been nagging myself to apply for jobs, and my parents have been as well. I always had reasons to put it off, Italy was a big one, but now that I am free and clear I realized it's time to finally do it. This came to light for a few reasons. Firstly, I need spending money. Secondly, what's the point having free time if all of your friends have jobs anyway? And lastly, I want to start saving up some actual money (thoughts of a European post-grad trip).

So I made up my resume and printed off quite a few copies. I've applied to quite a few places:

Read on after the jump...

Cineplex

My first application, I found a young, cool, blonde guy at guest services who informed me that all applications are done online; he gave me instructions and hinted that there may be a job opening in the next week or so. I've set up my account online and am just waiting for the posting to pop up.

Staples

I found the cashier and asked if there was anybody I could give a resume to. She took it and said that they aren't hiring at the moment, but she'll pass it along anyway.

Source by Circuit City

A middle-aged Indian man greeted me with a, "Hey, boss" and asked me to fill out an application when I gave him my resume. The 'application' consisted of half a page printed off of the website. As he handed it to me he asked if I was 18, I said no and apparently that's the age limit so I left.

HMV

There was only one guy working in the store and he took my resume without any questions or hassles, just the way I like it.

Future Shop

I inquired about handing in a resume at an empty cash register and a Jamaican lady informed me, "You gotta apply online, hun."

Marble Slab Creamery

I wasn't planning on applying here, but it just opened and I had lots of resumes so I decided to try. As I walked in a guy my age behind the counter saw me and asked knowingly "Resume?" and told me to hand it to the guy who just went in back. While I was waiting, his wife came out of the bathroom behind me and took my resume from me. She handed me an application and I filled it out at an empty table. As I waited to hand her back the application the man came out, took it and asked for my resume. I explained that the lady had it and he stood there and read my application right then. He asked me a few questions then left.

Canadian Tire

I waited in the customer service line to be directed to a small, brown box with the words "Job Applications" written on it in magic marker. I had to fold my nice, clean, cardstock resume 4 times before it would fit in the slot.

Home Depot

The customer service employee told me to apply online.

Best Buy

A burly customer service guy gruffly told me to apply online.

EB Games

The lone employee behind the desk took my resume and very eagerly wrote down the days and times I was available.

Purdy's Chocolate

The only store in the mall that I applied to that I knew was actively looking for help, they also took the days and times I was available.

Cole's

Upon giving the cashier my resume she remarked that there was a position available as recent as a few days ago and I'd have to close at least once a week (9 P.M.)

PJ's Pets

A very large woman told me very harshly that they were not hiring.

Shopper's Drug Mart

I had already gotten an application and filled it out for our local store (just around the corner). I went to hand it in and I caught the manager just as he was coming out from behind the counter. He took the application and resume, read them over, asked me a few questions then said, "I'll have a position opening at the end of September, I'll give you a call then and you can come in." which sounds like an interview at the very least.

Laser Quest

My friend applied here a few months ago and got an interview almost instantly, and seeing as it's such a cool place, I thought I'd try my luck. I bussed down and because I was early I stopped in at the bakery where my girlfriend works (Glitterbug12, we finally got together in June, she's amazing) which is just across the road from Laser Quest and grabbed a coffee. After that I waited outside of Laser Quest for a while with a father and son who were waiting to play. At 2 an employee a bit older than me opens the door and very emphatically asks me what I am here for today, I say "I'm here to apply for a job." He replies, "Damn straight! Come on in." before asking the others the same question and giving them the same reply. I surprised the guy by already having an application form filled in (he gave me a high five for that) and I was soon on my way home.

Those are all the places I've applied to so far, just for those that are interested I'm going to add a little sidebar gadget so that you can follow my progress if you like, I'll put them in order of likeliness of acceptance.

Wish me luck!
